For five generations Susanne Kaufmann’s family has accompanied visitors through the house and still gives insights into the history and present day use of the former imperial post office. This is a place in which hospitality has a lived vitality, which is as equally inherited as the family silver.

The architecture of the house is innovative building art – designed and realised by star architect Oskar Leo Kaufmann – lived and invigorated – by his sister – hotel owner –Susanne Kaufmann.

True to the original idea of combining the traditional and the modern –Oskar Leo Kaufmann had created a place with the Post in which simplicity and clarity does not divert from what is essential, and which allows originality to be felt again. The hotel is like the Bregenz Forest itself: authentic, spacious, of visionary modernity, quality as an obsession, crazy but still embedded in conventional traditions.

As a fixed star in the Vorarlberg gourmet heavens, under the direction of our chef of many years, Wolfgang Mätzler, our cuisine was awarded 16 points – two “toque” distinctions – by the renowned Gault Millau gourmet guide in 2006.

But the recipe of our success sounds so simple: “It is not the opulent that is impressed upon our senses, but that which is clear and reduced. It is exactly what we wish to realise in our cuisine and at the same time allow no compromise in quality. Just as one can see to the bottom of a clear stream, our guests should be able to taste every ingredient, every spice and every herb. And we know that nothing makes more work than reduction.”
